“Look into my eyes and tell me what it is you see in me” This lyric is from a rap group from the 90’s that probably none of you have ever heard about. This lyric is about looking beyond the outside of a person when you veer at them. When you look into someone's eyes it can often be a form of real genuine connection because the eyes are an entry point to your heart. Think about it, therapists tell married people to practice looking in each other's eyes as a form of connection, your emotions are moved based on what you look at, and your brain is even marked by what appears in front of you. Your eyes are not only good for looking out at different things, they are also useful for letting stuff in. The problem is that we have access to so much of the world at our fingertips and we aren’t always watching the right things. We have to protect ourselves from the toxic nature of what our society produces. Like staring into the eyes of Medusa and turning to stone, when we take in too much of the wrong thing, we risk turning our emotions to rock as well. Our eyes are the gateway to our soul; we must quard what comes in and protect ourselves.
